In celebration of Women’s History Month, WISE Memphis in collaboration with its founding partner, the Memphis Grizzlies will host its inaugural symposium and luncheon.

The InfluenceHer Symposium will focus on key issues and strategies for success concerning women in today’s workplace. Along with a special keynote address by Dr. Altha Stewart, there will be a panel discussion featuring leaders in sports, tech and philanthropy. The panel topic “Welcome to the Table: An open conversation about Women in the Workplace, the Pay Gap, Balancing Life, and Women’s Voting Rights”, will be the start of an ongoing dialogue to find and implement viable solutions to support and increase the success of women. Moderated by Kontji Anthony (Co-Anchor at WMC Action News 5), the panel will consist of Monica Skipper (VP of Brand Experience Marketing at FedEx), Terri Jackson (Executive Director of the WNBA Players Association) and Nisha Powers (President of Powers Hill Design and Co-Chair for the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis).

About Altha J. Stewart, M.D.

Altha J. Stewart, M.D. is Senior Associate Dean for Community Health Engagement for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. An Associate Professor and Chief of Social and Community Psychiatry, she is also Director of the Center for Health in Justice Involved Youth at the UTHSC. In 2018 she became the 145th President of the American Psychiatric Association, the first African American elected to this position in the 175-year history of the organization. Prior to joining the faculty at UTHSC, she served as Executive Director of the Memphis/Shelby County System of Care program. A native of Memphis, Dr. Stewart worked for decades as CEO/Executive Director in large public mental health systems in Pennsylvania, New York, and Michigan, overseeing the management and development of programs for persons with mental illness and substance use disorders. She received her medical degree from Temple University Medical School and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Regis College in 2006 and Doctor of Science from her alma mater, Christian Brothers University in Memphis in 2018. Dr. Stewart is past president of the Black Psychiatrists of America, the Association of Women Psychiatrists and the American Psychiatric Association Foundation. She is the recipient of the Memphis Child Advocacy Center Community Advocate Award, the Black Psychiatrists of America Lifetime Achievement Award, the HealthCare Hero – Physician Award from the Memphis Business Journal, and the 2019 Annual Africa in April Executive of the Year award.


About Kontji Anthony

Kontji Anthony is an award-winning news broadcaster with more than two decades of combined experience anchoring, reporting, producing and writing for network news affiliates across America. She is currently the evening anchor for WMC Action News 5. During her time in Memphis, Kontji has aired reports on the Today Show, conducted interviews for the E! News Network, performed live on CNN, and appears as a guest announcer on regional radio. Behind the scenes, Kontji is a community advocate. When she learned children were ashamed to go to back to school for lack of clothes that fit, she led an initiative with The Boys and Girls Club to raise thousands of dollars in various donations to clothe local school children. Additionally, Kontji organized a recent youth voter initiative as a member of The Links Incorporated, conceived a citywide day of service effort to spruce up dilapidated SCS buildings through Volunteer Memphis, and in a special partnership with WMC Action News 5 and Big Brothers Big Sisters helped increase mentorship between kids and caring adults by 35%. She is also an avid animal lover and helps match pets with people. Kontji is currently a Regional One Foundation board member, she’s on the Strengthening Nonprofits Committee for the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis, and is a member of the Junior League Community Advisory Board, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the National Association of Black Journalists, and the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences.
